Donaghadee Cricket Club 1st XI v Belfast Super Kings on Sat 26 May 2018 at 1pm
Donaghadee Cricket Club Won by 4 wickets

Match report Donaghadee Cricket Club finally got their season underway this past weekend. The weather and ground conditions have meant that no cricket has been possible for the 1st XI until late May and the team and club in general have been itching to get out for action. A double header of home games against Belfast SuperKings and Larne would give the side a great chance to kickstart the season at a sun-drenched Northfield.

New captain, Gavin Fraser won the toss on Saturday against Belfast Superkings and had no hesitation in putting the visitors into bat on a hot day with a wicket that was excellently prepared given the weeks of poor weather previously.

Ross Martin and Peter Devlin were given the new ball and the task of making early inroads to the Superkings top order. The combination of Martin’s control and Devlin’s pace was a real threat, and despite the attacking intent on offer from the visitors, early wickets fell. Jordan McCluskey was brought on and added another wicket but the score was progressing quickly with the Superkings passing 100 for the loss of only 3 wickets after 18 overs.

It was at this stage that Chris Walton was re-introduced. Chris, a vital member of the 1st XI squad, missed almost all of last season through injury and its fantastic to have him involved again. Chris changed the course of the game with a phenomenal spell of pace swing bowling taking 5 wickets. Phil McNamara chipped in with his usual couple of wickets as well to leave the Superkings just short of 150 all out. The Dee would require 147 for victory.

Skipper Fraser and Michael Martin opened the batting. Martin and Jonny Kennan both departed early however Fraser showcased his full array of shot making skills to quicken the runchase. He was ably supported by Ross Martin who displayed a calmness to his batting. Fraser passed a fantastic half century before holing out – the Dee were in a strong position after 24 overs on 90 runs for the loss of 4 wickets. Martin and McCluskey put on another 30 runs between them before a couple of quick wickets gave the Superkings a sniff (Martin making a solid and encouraging 20). But that man Walton again, along with Warren Martin smashed the necessary 25-odd runs to ease the Dee home for a brilliant start to the season winning by 4 wickets.
